Under this arrangement, Indian researchers, businesses, and research institutions will become eligible to receive direct funding from Horizon Europe and lead international collaborative research projects under its second pillar, which focuses on global challenges and European industrial competitiveness. Once signed and formally approved by both sides, the agreement is expected to come into effect from January of next year. )

Welcoming this development, Ekaterina Zaharieva, the EU Commissioner for Startups, Research, and Innovation, noted that the agreement will open up new avenues for businesses, researchers, and innovators from both sides to collaborate on the creation of future technologies.

'Horizon Europe' currently includes 23 non-EU countries, ranging from the United Kingdom, Canada, and Japan to South Korea and Switzerland. This partnership will enable Indian entities to receive grants directly from the European Commission. Furthermore, it will allow Indian scientists to lead and coordinate major international research projects within the covered sectors, under conditions equivalent to those available to entities based in EU member states.
